Back it Up

UCSB Information Technology Group (ITG) logoJustin Force, the Help Desk Manager for the Education department's Information Technology Group, recently sent an email about backing up data on the Education servers and I wanted to pass along some of his words of wisdom:

"If you've ever said or thought the phrase 'the only copy of my dissertation' you're doing it wrong. Your important work should not exist solely on our servers or on your home computer or laptop or flash drive or anywhere. You should have multiple copies of your important work to protect you from equipment and service failures."

Dissertation (and Data) Backup Options:

Photo Credit: SwirlStickCloud storage is a great way to backup data. I have Dropbox downloaded onto my computer and the two different laptops I use. I save files directly into my Dropbox folder and when I switch to another computer, I can find the recently saved files in the Dropbox folder on that computer (the files update automatically when you connect to the Internet). I also save a file on my desktop and e-mail important paper drafts to myself. You can never be too safe (imagine having to write an entire chapter of your dissertation over again...well maybe don't imagine that because you might start crying).

Another thing you can do, especially for long papers or your dissertation or thesis, is to save a new copy of the file every time you edit (save the file as: filename_date.doc). Then if you decide you want to include a section you already deleted, you can go back to the date of the file that had that section and copy from there.
