*Wine and hors d'oeuvres reception*

Winners will be announced and honored, and contest images will be displayed at the reception. About the Competition

The Art of Science is an event to capture the imagination and share the beauty and meaning of scientific discovery. UCSB students and postdocs were invited to tell the story of their research through the aesthetic. These works of art go on to share the creative nature and joy of scientific discovery with our community through multiple exhibits and outreach events throughout 2016. See the website for more details.

Art of Science Reception, Friday, Aug. 16

All graduate students are invited to a reception and awards ceremony for the first annual "Art of Science" competition.

Friday, August 16
Elings Hall Lobby
4 to 5 p.m
Refreshments provided

Contest images will be displayed at the reception and winning pieces will become part of an exhibit at the Davidson Library.

About the competition:

Recognizing the creative and experimental nature of science, the Art of Science initiative asked the simple question "Do you see beauty in your science?". Researchers were challenged to visually communicate the beauty inherent to scientific investigation and submit images from their research to be judged according to artistic/aesthetic merit. There will be various prizes (1st place = $250) and winning images will be displayed online and at an exhibit in the Davidson Library.

The Art of Science is a collaboration between the Schuller Lab (ECE) and the Center for Science and Engineering Partnerships at CNSI PDS. Contact Wendy Ibsen (, Jon Schuller (, or Arica Lubin ( if you have questions.

Grad Students Celebrate at Library Reception to Kick Off GSAW

At the library on Monday, the “stacks” were rows of crackers. The “studying” was trying to decide on the white or the red. The “checking out” was examining the snacks on the table. And the “cramming” was the crowd of grad students mingling in Mary Cheadle Room and on its balcony for the Wine and Cheese Kick-Off Reception to launch Graduate Student Appreciation Week.

The reception, hosted by the Davidson Library, drew a good size crowd and was a great event to kick off Graduate Student Appreciation Week. View our video below.

Next up for GSAW: “The PhD Movie,” airing tonight at Corwin Pavilion. The event runs from 4 to 6 p.m., and one lucky grad student will walk away with a free iPad!

For more information on the week’s events, visit our GSAW page.
